Spotlight on Midnite - A Star Rising
By Adjua Dubb
We live in a world that accepts American hip-hop as authentic but American reggae as flaccid. Sort of like looking for french fries in Chinatown--sure you can find it, but it's not the best, so why bother? American reggae has had a hard time finding an international audience that deem their music as authentic and as real as Marley, Tosh, or Beenie Man. There are subtle yet reinforced reminders that only real reggae comes from Jamaica, and no other place has the ability to produce talent that competes with the homegrown originals of Jamaican music. The charts, DJs and journalists constantly remind us of whose riddim and whose song is #1 in Jamaica. The award shows always hone in on strictly Jamaican reggae artists and therefore omit a great market and talent that is out there, pumping out great reggae music just the same. The time has come, for the many who thought only good authentic reggae comes from Jamaica-- to bite their tongues.
"Time is not counted from daylight, but from Midnite"
As an avid listener of reggae music, I am certain and definite when I hear true reggae that is thought provoking, heartfelt, and just damn good. It has been said that not everyone can play reggae, and I truly agree with that--it takes a certain vibration and sensibility to get the rhythms and timing right. Many times American bands lack the complete formula to provide consistent and full music and this can leave audiences limp. After all, many average bands have to avert to Marley tunes in between their own to keep the momentum. There is a need to keep covers on their playlists or their albums. For once I have come across a band who uses no filler, no derivatives and no covers to create an original sound of their own, and the st.Croix-based Midnite is that band.
Midnite's founders are ñGaindeî Ron Benjamin, keyboardist and musical director and his brother, Vaughn Benjamin, lead vocalist and principle songwriter. Together they have created a musical entity that has transformed reggae music and how we think about it. St. Croix, in the US Virgin Islands, is not necessarily American, and not at all Jamaican, but close enough to both coasts that the influences of each land is apparent upon first listen. Midnite does not "try" to be a reggae band, but instead they succeed where many others have not and that is in their originality and their determination to stay true to roots music. It's a very daunting task to find in these days of overdubbing, hip-hop and dancehall remixes into practically every modern reggae song that you hear. Midnite's resilience shines in their music because they have designed their songs to be raw and rootsy.
The band has produced four solidly superb albums that showcase their ability to go toe to toe with the very best out of Jamaica. "Unpolished," "Ras Mek Peace (before Reverb without Delay)," "Jubilees of Zion," and their most recent offering "Seek Knowledge before Vengeance" & ñIntense Pressure (Dub)î are all very strong efforts.
Midnite's sound has many Jamaicans wondering what parish are they from, and if they are not from Jamaica, then how dem a do it? How did they capture reggae so profoundly? A lot of that detail comes through in Midnite's steadfastly strong lyrical content with smooth yet simplistic melodies. Their message is clearly Rastafarian, and their devotion to spreading that message is firm and musically inspirational. They delve deep into subjects that are specific to these times and can address the distinct social problems of today. To complete their formula, they encompass heavy use of drum and bass patterns that are - reminiscent of the 70s classic period keeping a harmonious weave in their music. As an avid listener, their music is refreshing.
The band spent roughly six years in Washington, DC, testing out their brand of reggae on whomever would listen, and before long, they had a consistent following that trekked wherever the band played. Their DC shows mirrored going to church--getting cleansed by their music in some of the raunchiest clubs. Most nights the clubs would overflow with people to the point of crowd control--sweat dripping, elbow pushing, and toe stepping. There was always a sincerity in their approach to please the audience, despite the struggles they were going through to break the mold. The regulars and non regulars alike would come just to hear the band, and often the crowd would be singing and dancing so much, they'd be begging for an encore before closing their set for the evening. Every night was like that and it became apparent to the band that in order for them to graduate to another level in this business they would have to leave DC.
In 1999, Midnite left DC to return to St. Croix. DC has not been the same since--no other band has come on the scene to replace or fill their shoes; it became apparent to the reggae regulars that we had witnessed a star rising. And as frequenters of their shows, their absence left a deep impact on the reggae scene here. It's not often talent comes along and you're able to spot the essence of stardom when it appears.
Fast forward to 2002 and Midnite has successfully produced their third and fourth & Fifth album "Jubilees of Zion" and "Seek Knowledge before Vengeanceî & ñIntense Pressure." They have regrouped their promotion and marketing departments and are now re-introducing themselves to the larger world. No longer a "local" talent, they are a God-given talent that will go wherever the Most High will carry them. The band has been able to transcend to this level through sheer word of mouth, for their music speaks for itself.
Midnite will embark on a 2004 West Coast Tour starting Feb 5th in honor of Bob MarleyÍs Birthday & Black History month. Check the Midnite official web site, for more information.

(Review of Midnite for Amazon.com by Achis in Kingston, Jamaica Dec 2oo6)This discussion of modern roots reggae music can go no deeper than one or two paragraphs without some mention of the almost disturbingly wicked Midnite Band. Over the past 15 years, the St. Croix native band has built not only themselves, but the entire Virgin Island reggae scene into a burgeoning reggae juggernaut. The band STAYS on tour constantly, throughout the year, performing at sold out venues large and small alike and carrying some of the purest form of roots reggae available anywhere. And while they may ultimately lack mainstream exposure (of course) or even a heavy amount of support here in Jamaica, their peers are the ones who give them their ultimate respect as several well known Jamaican reggae artists admit to spinning Midnite constantly.
The band, led by brothers Benjamin, Vaughn- lead singer and and songwriter and Ron- Keyboards. Has built its reputation all over the Western Hemisphere by performing from coast to coast any and everywhere it was wanted. Originally establishing itself as a force on the east coast reggae scene in tiny Washington DC venues, the band now is a favorite and constant fixture on the west coast as well, routinely performing at the roaming festivals and events to sold out audiences from all over the country! The reason? Perhaps greater than any other single entity in reggae music today, Midnite has been able to string together COMPLETE consciousness without an ever so slight as a waver. The band has also opened doors for many VI artists literally and figuratively. As it stays on the road so frequently, the 'downtime' is used to promote and produce for wicked VI artists such as Dezarie, Ikahba Stone, NiyoRah and Danny I.
While their music has often been described as unusual (and downright odd) Midnite's soul mission is singing for His Imperial Majesty. Vaughn Benjamin's bag of lyrics is about as deep as anyone's making music today, so deep it is that in early 2006, he released a book of poetry and even embarked on a spoken word tour for that! Benjamin's style of CHANTING is so completely simple that its unique. He just chants! Sometimes in a mumbling style, but if you really listen to the words, you will undoubtedly be amazed.
This album, a 'collaboration' of sorts between the dominant band of the VI, Midnite, and the dominant label, I-Grade Records, is one of 3 in 2006 alone! They keep a Damian Marley like touring schedule and a Sizzla like recording schedule. Jah Grid, like most of Midnite's work is very strong. And while I certainly wouldn't recommend it to the new fans (its entirely too deep)(newer fans should pick up Ras Mek Peace or Nemozian Rasta), older fans of the band will definitely rate this album amongst the group's finest. It is definitely more veiled than other releases (which is saying a great deal as most of their releases can be described as such) but this album especially.
The best tune is probably the opener, the sick sick Enter which almosts flows like a lesson. Definitely want to have prior knowledge of whats going on in the world to fully grasp the meaning of the tune which Vaughn flows so easy, it almost sounds like he's making it up as he goes along (and he just might be).
Besides that, check the wicked My Joy, which i first noticed because it flows along the same riddim which backed NiyoRah and Pressure's MASSIVE Afrikan Chant tune from Niyo's most recent album Purification Session. My Joy is, curiously, a more aggressive track than most of the tracks on the album and it stands out to a great degree. Also standing out is the lyrically SUPERB Kin Dread. The song is a unifying tune against babylon, which isnt rare at all, but what is unique is the brilliant way Vaughn builds the lyrics building and making small points throughout the entire tune.
Having been a fan of the band for awhile as I mentioned I've kind of made a point to take awhile to listen to the entire album SEVERAL times before making a judgement as to its worth. Midnite's style is much of an acquired taste (which I'm STILL working on acquiring, my favorite Midnite album, Nemozian Rasta took nearly a year to grow on me), but Jah Grid, might be even deeper than that gem of an album.
Other highlight tracks include one of the most melodic tracks you'll ever hear from Vaughn, the wicked Before I Lose My Strength, the song is a heavy heavy praising tune which maybe has the best and most dynamic hook on the entire album as Benjamin actually ups the voice to a near full on SINGING style. Check the ultra cryptic YHWH to be both entertained and confused at the same time: "choose before a place where no choices be, Haile Selassie spoke of these issues in specificity!". Just typical Vaughn Benjamin style giving you just enough to keep you interested and leaving you to figure the rest!
I also have to recommend one of my favorite tunes altogether from the group, Royal Habits! Royal Habits is well well strong and preaches on how one should keep oneself and maintain oneself. The combination here features the unknown Jah Rubal, a bredrin of Midnite's who sounds a little like JA dj, Determine. Definitely check out Third Eye, the song on which he appears.
Overall, I'm rather cautiously recommending Jah Grid for Midnite fans. Stay far and far away from the album should you be a recent fan of the group for at least 5-6 years (but definitely make a note to come back to it at sometime in the future)! Midnite's vibes are not for everyone, I think even perhaps the Benjamin's themselves would admit that (although you wouldnt know that based on their recording and release schedules) but if you are truly able to appreciate their vibes consider yourself lucky and amongst the special chosen few. I have a friend down here who is a producer and he probably said it best when describing Midnite's vibe: "Somewhere Bob just asked Peter if he had that new Midnite". Do you? Maybe you should.
Update about the Midnite gathering at Ibex Ethiopian Café on Friday, March 9, 2007. So far, tickets are going fast and furious, mostly from fans as far away, as Spokane, Vashon, Olympia, Bellingham etc. We just want to ensure that tickets are available for the Seattle massive who don’t have to make such a far trod to get to the thanksgiving gathering. The Ibex is a very small intimate space of approx 250 capacity so we want to make sure fans have access to advance tickets at $20 a ticket online at www.mindfulmarket.com. It will be $25 at the doors the day of the show and I hate to hear ‘bawling’ because people didn’t take advantage of the presale discount.
Try to ignore all the excuses. Let’s ask ourselves, what would our founding fathers; Marcus Garvey and Bob Marley do? When faced with these pseudo adversities. They will tell the masses to view the inconvenience as development and progress to come in the future. We need to walk our talk and truth and rights will prevail. Midnite music is an example of this determination and Rasta Unity, so let’s come together in community and spread the love and harmony through self reliance and tenacity.
Remember Seattle represents the Pioneer spirit, the ability to create your own path, stepping into the light with Midnite on March 9th is the only option for the righteous mind. Be mindful by purchasing your advance tickets today at www.mindfulmarket.com and take the first step to overcoming the pseudo adversity and parking challenges the sheep mentality create to block Rastaman livity.
What you can do as an individual to support Midnite vibes and ensure the message of the wordsmith get far and wide...'block a sound'(spread the word) amongst your peer and associates, car pool to the event or take a cab and save gas while supporting the Ethiopian Franchise of the Yellow cab company, let's just make an effort to truly live mindfully, while supporting our people globally.
ON FRIDAY MARCH 9, THE IBEX CAFE will be elevated over all the construction taking place for the Seattle Light Rail line that will be installed in the Rainier Valley area. It is in the wake of all this positive and progressive development for our community that Vaughn Benjamin and Midnite enter into the 'scheme of things'. Midnite has been performing at this venue from the very beginning of my promotion with them. They love the ambience of this venue and so does the fans who also come to enjoy the best Ethiopian Cuisine in Seattle. Ibex is like Ethiopia which we praise and glorify as our Uthopia, therefore we couldn't get anymore impeccable with our message and our truths.
The Midnite Band haven't been touring for a while, they have been busy recording new music, supporting other artists, and working on solo projects. However the brothers, Vaughn and Ron have been to Seattle independently recently as 6 months ago to do works with Jah Breeze Promotion. Ron Benjamin the director and keyboardist for Midnite came with Dezarie at the Ibex Cafe and then Vaughn Benjamin came with his spoken word tour to the University of Washington, Ethnic Cultural Theatre.
This time they are opening up big gates to the Northwest, they are heading into Vancouver, Canada for the first time. Many Vancouver fans coming to the Seattle shows requested that this stop be included on the Northwest tour and they were happy to accommodate.
However, the big surprise of the tour is that this time they will be touring only in the Northwest with Mystic Vision as their opening band. Mystic Vision have recorded with Vaughn on the Midnite cd, 'Currant' and the recent Midnite release, title, 'Mystic Vision'. Mystic Vision is from New Mexico and has to be serious in their conviction to walk their truths for Vaughn and Midnite to endorse and promote them. Especially, since I know how meticulous and cautious, Ron Benjamin is regarding music and Rastafari principles.
This is exciting news for the Seattle roots reggae massive, it exhibits Rastas acceptance of all people regardless of race, color or creed......so eventhough the message is about the struggle and resistance of the Blackheart man, the echo have universal appeal and many others can identify and articulate for our cause and their cause as well, if they receive the 'mystic vision' to live up go deh..www.mysticvisionmusic.com for more information regarding this opening band. This is their mission/vision statement:
"Our mission is to bring truth to the world as it is shown to us through the lessons and experiences of life. We strive for international morality and world citizenship realizing that our pursuits are empowered by inner forces that drive all creations. The music is the means by which we relate our truth and reverberate it throughout the universe. Blessed are all singers , players, and dancers. We shall use music to crush these walls of Jericho...... Our world cries out for change. She spins while humanity loses control of the lower self and propels themselves into destructive behaviour. The irrationality must stop. Every individual has an obligation to make a positive change in their outlooks upon our present world situation. Please open your hearts and minds to your roles in what is so necessary to our well-being."
Seattle massive, get ready to witness a gathering like no other in the history of reggae music in the region in a while. However, because there is raspect in my heart and community, I must say big up to Culture Yard and Diamond Life for holding it down while I chill in the mountains enjoying the wildlife and creating original music in the woods. This show represents reggae music at its finest, you done know how Jah Breeze takes no freeze when he is representing roots and culture with ease. This show will definitely be sold out. For ticket information go deh to the lion heart to purchase tickets online from Mindfulmarket.com.
However if you miss it in Seattle, you would want to grab your passport and head on into to Vancouver, Canada the next nite, because Midnite will be spreading the love to the Canadians for the first time on their own turf. This way my friends and fans don't have to travel all the way to Seattle. Big Up to Alexandria for her persistence, support and request to connect to the right promoters to host Midnite in Canada. We are building bridges internationally in community and harmony.
“Until the lions become their own historians, tales of the hunted will always glorify the Hunters…….let’s go hunt….Rasta nah go be discreet, when there is time to gate keep.

I have hosted and promoted, the African Showboys from Ghana, I-Grade Summer
Tour 2005 and Tony Rebel/Queen Ifrica along with the Rebel Roots Krew. These are
all quality artists and their shows were fantastic, except for the fact that they
were not high attendance as was expected at the shows. They are many factors which
contributed to this lack of attendance, but I can assure you, my people, that
from a promotional stand point I have done all I can as a grass roots rasta promoter
to bring quality roots and culture shows to Seattle. I love supporting everyone
when they are doing it with integrity. It show a crucial strenght.
